Abstract

Climate change has manifested as a primary catalyst of extreme weather patterns in Karachi. The rise in temperature has disturbed the conventional climate cycle, leading to extended periods of drought, heat waves, and erratic rainfalls. These extreme weather patterns are a direct result of wide-ranging climate unpredictability intensifying local vulnerabilities. Besides that, the expansion of cities, lack of sustainable infrastructure, and poor governance have increased the effects of extreme weather. The extreme weather conditions experienced in Karachi can be seen as a tangible outcome of the global climate crisis, experienced by locals. This study examines the impact of extreme weather conditions on daily wage labors in Karachi from 2015 to 2022. It evaluates the impacts of extreme weather conditions on the socio-economic status, personal well-being, and livelihood of daily wage labors. The study employs mixed method approach. The findings indicate that extreme weather conditions adversely affect the socio-economic status, mental health, and physical well-being of the workers. The results of the study provide experimental evidence for policymakers to develop targeted strategies and policies. The study recommends climate-resilient urban planning and promotes social and climate justice for Karachi's disadvantaged daily workers.
